You can't help but think that Bauhaus have been somewhat misguided in calling their impending comeback tour 'Resurrection'.  Undoubtedly meant to imply coffin lids creaking open as the undead walk among the living, it touches any attempt at integrity with an all-too-dead hand.  The Creatures, though, would probably prefer 'Rejuvenation'.  Siouxsie certainly looks like she's been bathing regularly in the blood of virgins since The Banshees dissolved.

At least, she does later.  To start with, nothing's looking good.  Any hopes for an entrance of regal froideur are scuppered when the band can't get their technology to work, undermining the credibility exchange of having Witchman support and making them appear as in touch with the modern world as those little old ladies who worry about electricity leaking from sockets.  When they do kick into new single 'Second Floor', Siouxsie staggering around under her Everygoth tangle of hair and black lace like a gin-addled seaside landlady entertaining startled guests, the baroque tumble of the record crashes into a murderous caterwauling.  If this is the goth revival, it's crumbling under the spotlights.

Just when this open-tune surgery demands general anaesthesia, there's a transformation worthy of Christopher Lee.  They play the bamboo-and-bells incantation of 'Miss The Girl' and it's superb, a flicker of percussive lust that Siouxsie gleefully calls "Budgie's punishment".  She slicks back her hair, removes the flapping lace to reveal a sleek corset, and it's as if the grim first half was just some sly goth parody.  Budgie, looking like he should be eyeing up the talent down at Venice Beach, hammers an esoteric array of drums like someone's lit a fire under him while she clashes cymbals through a virulent 'Venus Sands', or writhes through the sinister desire of the new 'Prettiest Thing'.  By the time the brass trio and drag queens have emerged to shimmy through 'Right Now' and 'The Passenger', this regeneration game is won.

Black is the new black, the old black, the only black.  As you were, then, but more importantly, as you are
