DOWNSIDE UP - FOREWORD | ||
|
||
|
||
Well it's about bloody time!
As far back as 1986 I was excited by the prospect of releasing a compilation of our 'B' sides and extra tracks, but my shouts fell on deaf ears. Until now. Like most enduring enigmas we also had another intriguing face that wasn't always visible. Ours was just the flip of a wrist away on the 'Downside' of a 7" or 12" vinyl single. The most influential factor in the making of these rough-cut gems was the limited time we had to create them. Usually with little or no preparation and with only a short weekend available (Saturday and Sunday), we were required to write, record and mix a couple of songs. Easy peasy and proof that we always excelled under pressure. Come Monday morning we were often leaving the studio just as the cleaners arrived, the finished mixes already on their way to be mastered and 'glued' to the 'A' side. God I miss how quick and easy it was to get things done. The best thing about doing these 'B' sides and why I have always had such an affection for them, is that prior to the session we never knew what we were going to come away with and that we would be far from prying eyes and the company spies. Honing and polishing the precious raw material has never held a lot of interest for me. I can appreciate it but for me the most important thing is the initial spark and energy of the idea. Too often those vital ingredients become buried and diluted with too much contemplation and 'over cooking'. All artists can be guilty of this crime, although thy rarely realise until it's too late. I myself prefer things a little on the raw side. So, whilst the 'A' sides were everyone's darlings. I was over familiar with them. But at least I had my beloved 'Bs' to discover and get to know. Siouxsie Sioux, 2004. |

Siouxsie Sioux performs at the 100 Club (for the first time since 1976) on the 5th 6th and 7th of October and at the Royal Festival Hall with a full orchestra on the 15th and 16th of October. In October 1976, Siouxsie and the Banshees took to the stage at London's 100 Club Punk Festival. Siouxsie, Steven Severin, Sid Vicious and Marco Pirroni played a legendary version of The Lord's Prayer. At the time the band and the audience had no idea of the success that was to follow from this impromptu and inspired appearance.....the Banshees had arrived. Since then the Banshees have had countless hits and a
longevity most bands dream of. This B Side Box Set entitled "Downside
Up" is a celebration of those tunes that you didn't see being
performed on Top Of The Pops, the ones that stick in your memory but
have not made it into your CD collection because up until this point you
couldn't get hold of them. For many, the B Sides were the
quirkiest and the most adventurous tunes, in fact quizzed in 1988 about
her ten-year recording career, Siouxsie Sioux said: "I never look
back." Pausing for a moment, she added: "It's maybe only
the B-sides that I would listen to." Given the depth and
range of the band's catalogue up to that point, it was a remarkably
modest assessment of The Banshees B-side was that paradise place where the
band could rework material from their own catalogue, or break out into
dance beats, acid rock or industrial sound. If she felt like it,
Siouxsie would skip into another language entirely, from her semi-native
French into German or Spanish. Sometimes, they'd "Downside Up", the B side collection contains 50 tracks with over 30 never before released on CD. All the tracks have been remastered and sourced from the original tapes. |

Siouxsie Sioux first came to our attention in 1976 as a Sex Pistols acolyte who was standing behind the band during the notorious interview with Bill Grundy on the Today programme. Yet with hindsight, her work doesn't seem to belong to punk at all. Her debut album didn't appear until 1978, by which time untutored three chord thrashing was beginning to appear passé. Instead, with the Banshees she helped invent a form of post-punk discord full of daring rhythmic and sonic experimentation that was as influential as it is underrated. Downside Up features 55 tracks spread across four discs, some of which have not previously appeared on CD. The result is a collection that constitutes an alternative history far more revealing than a greatest hits package, for here is a group that never filled b-sides with inferior throwaway tracks. Rather they saw them as an outlet for some their most radical and challenging work. Standouts include the spiky Drop Dead/Celebration, the sinister Eve White/Eve Black and the chopped up industrial funk of Tattoo, tracks that prove that the Banshees stand proudly alongside PIL, Gang Of Four and The Fall as the most audacious and uncompromising musical adventurers of the post-punk era. 4/5 Nigel Williamson |

Dedicated to the celebrated photomontage artist of the
Twenties/Thirties, John Heartfield, the original title for this song was
'Letter To Heartfield'. The chorus is taken from one of Goerring's
speeches during the Second World War. SIOUXSIE: "It's a warning song. The whole propaganda of the Nazis at that time was very dangerous and it could easily creep its way in without there being all the hysteria of killing the Jews. Their whole propaganda could easily fit in today." How does she see this Metal Metropolis? "Not being able to get away from the commands of the day, not being able to escape, the idea of having cameras in your room and having people watching you..." Source: Melody Maker 21/10/78 SIOUXSIE: "What lies around the swastika I hate, but I also don't identify with blind patriotism either. I couldn't write a song based around Heartfield if I had that attitude." Source: Melody Maker 17/02/79 |
