Description: | ||
The band: Siouxsie Sioux, Steven Severin, Budgie, John McGeoch. Shot 8-10/05/81. First video with John McGeoch. Filmed in Burnham Beeches (Boreham Wood), location for many of the exterior scenes on Hammer Horror. The video begins with a prowling cat superimposed over Siouxsie on all fours in the iconic leather mini skirt and thigh length boots, in front of burning stage curtains. Although the band are still playing their instruments, this is the first video where the band venture outside of a studio. The main action involves the band running and leaping through the woods. In a couple of shots Siouxsie wears a partial mask and the band are pursued by a 'demon' not unlike the one that can be found in the Japanese film 'Onibaba', one of Siouxsie's favourite films at the time of recording. Look out for McGeoch losing his footing in the chase.

More
menacing childhood memories dredged up and dressed up in tired old
riffs. Siouxsie sounds disinterested; McGeoch wrenches out the
standard guitar atmospherics. Thin, brittle, forgettable; no push,
no magic; avoid this voodoo.

Description: | ||
The band: Siouxsie Sioux, Steven Severin, Budgie, John McGeoch. Shot July 1981. This is the original version of 'Arabian Knights' that aired on Top Of The Pops and then was not seen again until over 20 years later when it resurfaced on the 'The Best Of (Sound & Vision)' DVD. Filmed whilst on tour in Marseille. Siouxsie is unrolled from a carpet, a snake winds it's way across the desert, waves crash against the cliffs and the boys play a board game. Siouxsie flies through the air on the carpet and a sword fight ensues. This and the 'Spellbound' video were the first to move out of a studio setting, it also marks the beginning of a move to focus more on Siouxsie's face. First promo video that doesn't feature the band playing their instruments.

||
Description: | ||
The band: Siouxsie Sioux, Steven Severin, Budgie, John McGeoch. This is, perhaps, the more commonly seen version of the 'Arabian Knights' video and is the version found on the 'Once Upon A Time' video collection. It is, however, a second edit. The main differences between this and the original edit are; there is no opening sequence of Siouxsie being rolled out of the carpet, this has been replaced by scenes of Siouxsie walking, in fact all scenes that indicate a flying carpet have been removed. The other main difference is that the sword fighting sequence is no longer in colour but in sepia. The reasons for the changes are not known.

SIOUXSIE:
" 'Arabian Knights' was inspired by the fact that I was listening
to a lot of The
Doors at the time. I wanted those kind of melodies
running through it." Source: The Authorised
Biography 2002 SIOUXSIE: "It’s nothing to do with a ‘feminist’ thing, it’s like a humane thing. Like how the Muslim women cope, I don’t know. The way women are treated in some religions, if it was a race being treated like that and not a sex, there would be uproar about it. I still haven’t overcome being a girl yet, as far as other people see me, and that’s very important. I think it’s happened a bit, but not enough." Source: NME 15/08/81 SIOUXSIE: "To think, some of our records might end up with an 'X' certificate. Like all the fuss over our 'Arabian Knights' single with the line about 'orifices'. It was only a new way of describing something...something natural, physical. It wasn't smutty or rude. Just imagery...but they don't like that." Source: Smash Hits 06/86 SIOUXSIE: With 'Arabian Knights' it was quite a thrill to get the word 'orifices' on the radio." Source: Record Mirror 11/11/89 |
