The call was certainly there, but the response was sadly lacking. "I know we've been on the road for ten weeks - thanks for making it seem like ten years," snarls Sioux to her meek audience of 'bank clerks' before turning to her band and demanding bitterly, "Start something." Evidence, that the ju-ju karma might not be all that it should had surfaced the previous night at the Palais across the road; at 6 p.m. the band had apparently unilaterally decided to strike all press from the list. But although reports of that show indicated that the Palais had been no paradise place, it was difficult to fault the venom, the vigour and of all things the consummate artistry of the penultimate London show. That problem seems rooted in Siouxsie's inability to coax her audience to grow with her. It's a long way from '76, but as the inventive and impressive lightshow moves ever closer to the Genesis arena the bemused mohicans down the front appear content with vertical movements in the time-honoured fashion amid much shouting for old faves. Therein the sad albatross of the punk mantle. Siouxsie, herself, never a natural singer, performer or indeed songwriter, has become a genuine and lasting talent despite herself; her ad hoc origins long consigned to the memory banks by her if not her audience, she has developed and perfected a commanding stage presence that brooks no casual acceptance, and yet that ultimate insult, approaching apathy, was what she had to contend with for her troubles. And it wasn't the fault of the band either. Steve Severin, John McGeoch and Budgie all played with a ferocity and sheer intelligence that left no rational cause for dissent and yet the banshee brigade remained strangely unmoved by it all. Budgie in particular has become a drummer of lasting value, inserting patterns of joyous originality in to almost every number. Opening effectively with the jaundiced "Exposure", swathed in baleful red smoke, Sioux drove home the songs point by dedicating it to porn-king Paul Raymond. "Halloween", "Hong Kong Garden" and "Christine", featuring some tremendous acoustic work by John McGeoch (happy birthday!) followed, and set the tone for a crisp set of three minute songs mostly culled from the last two albums. The much-vaunted lightshow really came into its own on "Arabian Knights", a backdrop of moon-flecked sea rippling against a desert silhouette, and Sioux discarded her leather jacket revealing a tiny bolero over a red-fringed black Pocahontas number. The visual pyrotechnics continued, Siouxsie bending aside the light and sweeping it out of her way during "Head Cut", an ominous Goat Of Mendes voodoo mask in flames behind her. But their best efforts were to little avail, and following an ironic "Spellbound" the band left the stage to applause that would have demeaned them had they returned for an encore. Pearls before swine, I thought, but maybe there is just about, a case against an uncompromising band like the Banshees putting on a large scale traditional rock show in a large scale traditional rock venue like the Odeon. Sioux thinks so anyway, which is why this is the last time Peter Owens |

Woolwich, dark in
the daytime, come evening the natives are turning off their television
sets hesitatingly and making their way outdoors. Black tunnels,
green clouds and brown rain, the railway sidings lie rusting and the
dockyard cadavers lie in wait for millions of pounds that will never
arrive. This is the end of the earth, countryside devastated,
industry worn out, the land of the Stalker.
Walking down the abandoned high street, you notice rows of shops full of goods people are unable to afford. Even the attempt to lure the eyes of the consumer with the word "Sale" seems futile. At the end of this sterilised pantheon to society lies the Odeon and tonight Siouxsie, the embodiment of reaction to all of this, plays her first night of an extremely long tour which will take her all over the country. This was the first engagement the Banshees had ever had with Woolwich and the response was priceless. From out of the dead-end jobs and dole queues crawled the army of the night. Skins, Punks, Mohicans and other blackened souls, clamouring towards their only saviour remaining from their revolt of '77. They need Siouxsie as much as she needs them; the relationship is perfect. The front row mirrors her words with their mouths, their eyes fixed upon her sculptured face, lest they miss a single glance or a sharp nuance; "From the cradle bars comes a beckoning voice. It sends you spinning, you have no choice". This is Whitelaw's army in their battered temple of worship transformed by the style and bastardised elegance of Sioux in her surgeons coat and Bangkok leggings. The ceremony begins in true cinematic style: a blackout behind the curtains the lights hum, then part to reveal a backdrop of scudding clouds and we stride into 'Israel'. Searchlights in the floor create a wall of colour behind which the band stand, from right to left McGeoch, Sioux and Severin - the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. But it is Siouxsie who dominates the picture palace, stalking the stage like an eagle searching for rats, hopping and twisting in front of a desert landscape for 'Arabian Knights'. The sound is impeccable. Budgie's drumming thundering through the night like a battalion of urban infantry. Suddenly we are taken aboard ship, McGeoch's guitar is the engine-room bell, the theatre is a sea of mist, Sioux dons a Panama hat for 'Head Cut' and the wails become progressively searing and painful. As one over-zealous enthusiast makes for the deck he is unceremoniously dumped by a blue-tracksuited steward. Sioux pushes the thug to one side and then silently, mistresslike, chides the boy for misbehaving. Windows appear along the back wall, and as she crawls through the Banshee palace on all fours for 'Tenant' and 'Night Shift' her hair is plastered to her face. She becomes Louise Brooks in Pandora's Box, dragging herself through what seems the complete repertoire from 'Kaleidoscope' and 'Juju' eviscerating every shade of sound and meaning. This leaves her crumpled in a heap, centre-stage, like a little girl who in a fit of spite and despair has broken all her toys and now has nothing left. While some prefer to be left in the ascendant, forced to return for more the next time, the Banshees believe in total deliverance and in doing so provide the best live movie of Gothic tragedy still breathing. "Following the footsteps of a rag doll dance, we are entranced - Spellbound." Simon Fellowes |
