Punk rock Parisian style
There are many reasons to visit Paris in late September - to watch the Rugby World Cup, to soak up the moody autumnal weather (read: warm drizzle), to travel by Eurostar from Waterloo for one final time, but the reason I was there at the weekend was to witness a very special gig from punk legend Siouxsie Sioux. The show was the first in Coke Music’s series of gigs in strange locations. Paris isn’t that strange, you say, and you’re right, which is why the gig took place up the Eiffel Tower. Yes, up the Eiffel Tower. Beat that. This wasn’t your typical spit and sawdust punk gig, in fact the venue was the most pristine we’ve seen in a long time - it was like a theatre without the seats. The idea behind the Coke Music Discovery Sessions is that each headline act gets to choose the support bands, which is why London based alt electro outfit Headland were onstage when we arrived at the venue. The enigmatic five-piece are fronted by the dapper Tom Ball, who sports the kinkiest moustache we’ve seen since David Niven appeared in the Pink Panther films of the early 1980s. Their brand of funk-laden electro-pop was the perfect music to sip Champagne to while staring wide-eyed over the neon-lit Parisian night sky. By the time Siouxsie Sioux and her band arrived on stage, the 250-strong crowd - made up of die hard Siouxsie fans and competition winners - were buzzing with excitement. She didn’t disappoint. Sporting a skin-tight silver, black and pink cat suit, Siouxsie looked stunning - “she’s the same age as Madonna but looks so much better” commented one audience member as the singer executed one of her trademark scissor kicks. Playing material from first solo album Mantaray, she sounded a little like Depeche Mode and a lot like, well, Siouxsie Sioux. The punchy, upbeat numbers were much better than the stripped-down ones, but each song was a platform for Siouxsie is show that she’s still got it where it counts. Chris Wilson |
