The Koran is universally accepted by Muslims to be the infallible word of God.

The section/book titled 'Ornaments Of Gold' was the inspiration for the song of the same name.

Siouxsie Sioux is a lone Baudelaire in a world of Pam Ayreses, riding effortlessly above cliché-mongering charlatans like McCoy, McCulloch and Hussey; and her Banshees have produced some of the most flagrantly opulent music of this decade.  Shame, then, that Brian Johns' "Entranced" (Omnibus Books) captures little or none of their elusive mystique.

Instead, he takes a detached, voyeuristic standpoint (the leering introductory account of Goth girls in Camden Market is so out-of-touch it's unbelievable) and makes quantum leaps from hearsay to supposition;  "Her seventh birthday yielded a litter of kittens which were to become soulmates... Mysterious, beautiful and independent, these creatures provide as good a role model for the future singer as any human could.  (Oh yeah, Sioux had some pet moggies so it was inevitable she'd become the ice queen/poet goddess of Goth).  Pure hackwork.

He also seems to have a somewhat exaggerated view of Siouxsie's cultural impact.  "Visually (she) may well be the Cleopatra of the technological age."  The book does contain a pretty impressive array of photographs, although the shock of realising just how awful Siouxsie has looked (it's one thing to wear a Swastika armband, quite another to do it badly) is perhaps not the kind of iconoclasm we're looking for.  Elsewhere it's difficult to escape the impression that this glorified discography, written with little love for (or understanding of) this unique band is a wasted opportunity.  Nice group, shame about the book.
