Description: | ||
The band: Siouxsie Sioux, Steven Severin, Budgie, Martin McCarrick, John Klein. Shot late June, early July 1987 at Abbey Road Studios. Video director Clive Richardson spent a week with the band filming them rehearsing for inclusion in the video, but when it was later decided that this approach was not really working, it was abandoned. In it's place, hats, masks, feathers, headdresses. Siouxsie rummages through her dressing up box. Lots of superimposing, vibrant colours interspersed with shots of the band playing their instruments and Siouxsie swimming and 'diving for pearls'. The underwater sequences filmed at White City Swimming Pool, London, have been treated and give the footage an inky stylised feel, not unlike an oil slick at times. Footage was also shot in the grounds of White City, but was deemed to be unsatisfactory. First video appearance of new boys McCarrick and Carruthers. Last video directed by Clive Richardson, making him the most popular video director the band worked with. This video has still not received an official release, which may be due to the bands feelings about working with producer Mike Thorne rather than the video itself.

Description: | ||
The band: Siouxsie Sioux, Steven Severin, Budgie, Martin McCarrick, John Klein. The video opens with some striking animation that is used in varying degrees throughout. The video is thematically very much in keeping with the song. The emphasis is on light and shadow, lots of close-ups on lips and eyes, angular cut out shapes and silhouettes. The video also marks a return to choreographed dance routines. Siouxsie and Budgie's mask collections are put to good use throughout and effective use of the band (through their actions) directing the camera, e.g. Siouxsie pushes the camera and it swings away from it's focus upon her. Footage of a Carnival in Venice were shot for possible inclusion but later disregarded. The first time the band had worked with director Peter Scammel and cameraman John Mathieson, who later went on to receive acclaim for his work on the film 'Gladiator'.

Any suspicions I might have had that the Banshees had stagnated beyond the point of redemption are simply lambasted into non existence by this record. Siouxsie's vocals rise uncluttered out of the mix just where they should be and insinuate and charm at the same time. The whole thing shows a spirit and fire not seen since those halcyon days of the early Eighties. A joyful thing to behold.

Description: | ||
The band: Siouxsie Sioux, Steven Severin, Budgie, Martin McCarrick, John Klein. The video opens with an animation of hands grasping at butterflies in flight. The animated sections are in monochrome, whilst the remainder of the video is tinted in either greens or purplish blues. As the singing commences Siouxsie is found 'trapped' in netting. A fish eye lens is then used as the group walk around in a circle, giving the impression that they are circling a 'killing jar', (the object used when collecting butterflies and moths). Siouxsie is seen slowly spinning on her back, as if pinned and mounted like a prized possession. Towards the end of the song a strobe is used to great effect as Siouxsie flaps and swoops like a butterfly. Footage of the band members dressed as butterflies and sewn together to resemble pupae or caterpillar ended up on the cutting room floor. The final scenes show Siouxsie with her 'wings' spread, as animated hands crawl and clutch at her.

Inspiration/Influence/Band Comment
"A
killing jar is a device used by butterfly collectors to contain and
ultimately kill their specimen. The use of the word killing jar in the
song is used as a metaphor for controlled violence. An emotional
relationship snuffed out until it is merely a prized possession or keep
sake."

Just because Siouxsie doesn't keep a tarantula on her head these days doesn't mean 'she's lost any of her formidable aura. 'The Last Beat Of My Heart' is a swirling, smouldering masterpiece which will capture your ticker within the first few moments and hold it fluttering in awe. With a ghostly accordian adding to the building power, Siouxsie's hypnotic voice is just unnerving enough to delight. A true gem.

Description: | ||
The band: Siouxsie Sioux, Steven Severin, Budgie, Martin McCarrick, John Klein. The video is filmed in sepia and was recorded in one continuous shot. The opening scene is hazy and out of focus. The camera gradually pulls away and the image slowly sharpens to reveal Siouxsie in extreme close-up. The camera continues to pull back until finally Siouxsie is seen in full, standing in an empty room gazing out of a window. Whilst Siouxsie remains in the background the other band members appear briefly in the foreground before disappearing once more.

Strange Fruit having issued the Banshees' groundbreaking debut for Peel, it comes as no surprise that their second session would follow in due course. Dating from February 1978, several months before the band secured a record deal, this one features excellent versions of tracks that would form the basis of their debut album 'The Scream', and of course, the song that gave them a Top 10 single at the first attempt, 'Hong Kong Garden'. Neither this, nor the versions of 'Carcass', 'Helter Skelter' and 'Overground' vary markedly from the official versions, but this shouldn't prevent the likes of you and me from investing in this important slice of recorded history.
