Kiss Them For Me Advert - Click Here For Bigger ScanSublime.  A deadly sharp return from the Banshees that's likely to offend as many as it converts, though in our elite circle of bright young aesthetes we've yet to meet anyone who hasn't swooned over it.  Outside this cloistered environment, however, we're sure there be those who'll be horrified by it's baggy backbeat and shear unashamed danceability.  It doesn't just groove though, that would be way too easy for them.  It floats almost imperceptibly to it's ecstatic climax, each sweet verse and saccharin chorus a tantalising hint of what's to come.  And when it comes, by Christ your knees give way.  It's also got a very great lyric, the flowery, thorny tale of the exuberant Hollywood star, Jayne Mansfield, who was decapitated in a car accident on her way to New Orleans.  With that knowledge the line "Kiss them for me, I may be delayed", delivered with almost wistful innocence, takes an especially unnerving quality.  And if all this wasn't enough, Siouxsie's looking more beautiful than she ever has done.  Just sublime.

  Description:
The band:  Siouxsie Sioux, Steven Severin, Budgie, Martin McCarrick, John Klein.  An exploding champagne cork and a golden cherub set the scene.  On a set comprised of palm trees and a heart shaped swimming pool (in reference to Jayne Mansfield, the subject of the song), Siouxsie unveils a radically new look, shoulder length wavy hair and a tight sparkling dress.  A softer looking Siouxsie shimmies her way through the video, and at one point cavorts in her bathing suit in the 'heart shaped pool of fame' .  The video is an interpretation of a glamourous Hollywood lifestyle and reflects Mansfield's love of pink and 'heart shaped' things..  The boys in the band line up moodily in the background taking it in turns to nurse a pet poodle (another reference to Jayne Mansfield).  The Eastern flavoured music is complimented during the instrumental break with Siouxsie's exotic dance moves against a backdrop of Indian images.

It glittered and it gleamed
For the arriving beauty queen
A ring and a car
Now you're the prettiest by far

 No party she'd not attend
No invitation she wouldn't send
Transfixed by the inner sound
Of your promise to be found

Nothing or no one will ever make me let you down

Kiss them for me, I may be delayed
Kiss them for me,  if I am delayed

It's divoone, oh it's serene
In the fountains pink champagne
Someone carving their devotion
In the heart shaped pool of fame

Nothing or no one will ever make me let you down

Kiss them for me,  I may be delayed
Kiss them for me,  I may find myself delayed

On the road to New Orleans
A spray of stars hit the screen
As the 10th impact shimmered
The forbidden candles beamed

Kiss them for me,  I may be delayed
Kiss them for me,  I may find myself delayed
Kiss them for me,  Kiss them for me
Kiss them for me,  I may find myself delayed

Jayne Mansfield was the inspiration behind the song 'Kiss Them For Me'.  "This song was sparked off by Jayne Mansfield's story.  She typified the dream that Hollywood holds for young women - a fairytale thing."  (Siouxsie)  Source: Record Hunter 12/92.

  Return Lyrics

Wonder where that plane is leading to
Wonder where that boat will ever stop
Wonder if this path I am treading
Will disappear and let me drop

Down to a hell that's surely waiting
Down to the hell I know that I deserve
Even though the spirit is willing
The flesh is blackened to the deepest nerve

When will you learn
The hurting it will return
When will you ever learn
This feeling is all you can discern

Oh my heart it is so broken
More than waves upon the golden sand
Fly my love on wings of mute confusion
And never ever land

When will you learn
When will you ever learn
The hurting it will return
This feeling is all you can discern

When will you learn
When will you ever learn
This feeling is all you can discern
The hurting always will return

The face of a woman who never knew me

Now this ringing in my ears
Sends me spinning down the years
And I really need to know
Who is she?
Who is she?

Now this ringing in my ears
Sends me spinning down the years
And I really need to know
Who is she?

Shadowtime Advert - Click Here For Bigger ScanThere's no denying Siouxsie looks great these days: recent photographs have seen her smoldering like Hedy Lamarr or Sophia Loren, or fluttering eyelashes coyly a la Audrey Hepburn.  Meanwhile on this picture sleeve she's a dead ringer for a randy Spanish widow.  However, and I apologise for boring you with irrelevances like, say, the music, "Shadowtime" itself is watered down Banshees by numbers.  The big chiming guitars virtually catapult the song towards American stadia, and the whole thing has dollar/pound signs doing whizzing-fruit-machine-hits-jackpot impressions in it's eyes.  I'm all for ditching the avant-garde and diving into the mainstream, but Christ in a tunic, it's got to be done with a bit more flair and élan than this.

  Description:
The band:  Siouxsie Sioux, Steven Severin, Budgie, Martin McCarrick, John Klein.  The location?  A different solar system.  Against a backdrop of moons, stars and planets, each member of the band is wearing a low strung guitar, including Siouxsie.  Lined up along the surface of another planet, Siouxsie in the foreground, the whole band play exaggerated 'air guitar' to great effect.  Another clever device is the use of stillness, whereby band members appear to be frozen in time.  The instrumental break utilises stock footage, drawings, sketches of planets, moons, stars etc.

The voice asleep, the voice has vanished
From the top of the sky to the place below
Touch the surface and the mirror bends
Your words resound, out of control
Freeze into time now

Still inside, yet doubt survives
It all begins, beneath the skin
No one is near, no one will hear
Your changeling song take shape
In Shadowtime

Turn your wish to a vapour, the silhouette fades
Eclipse your blue eyes, and the outline remains
From the house of the moon to the stars up above
Amidst the comets, first sight of love
So begins the countdown

Falling sky, a solar sigh
It all begins, beneath the skin
No one is near, none will hear
Your changeling song takes shape
In Shadowtime

Shadowtime

Catching fire, taking hold
All that glisters leaves you cold
No one is near, no one will head
Your changeling song take shape
In Shadowtime

  Spiral Twist Lyrics

Home is where the rain is soft and soothing
Home is where the comfort is confusing
Taste of cordite burning bridges
Swallowing tracks across my head

Home is moving in the wrong direction
Animated statue eyes are blinking
Reflex of asphyxiated thinking
Suspended, submerged badly disrupted
Out of touch I'm out of reach

Struck by a car
Crushed by a tree
Fork in my palm
Glass in my spleen
I snap the rope snap the wrists
Here in the ether the spiral twists

This is the time when our minds begin stalking
Jammering on when our lips have stopped talking

Simple people, simple needs
Fingers finger endless beads
Tolling benediction bell
Hear this earthly spiral swell

Home is moving in the wrong direction

  Sea Of Light Lyrics

I float quietly
Without a sound
Forever and ever 'til the end of time
And see myself lying still at the scene of the crime
Lying still at the scene of the crime

Like blood in the body
Like wind in the water
I passed over to the sea of light
Follow me into to the sea of light
The sea of light

The miracle step off the rainbow's edge
Let it rain down let it descend
Riding on a river of stars
The heaven's open at the tunnel's end

Like blood in the body
Like wind in the water
I passed over to the sea of light
Follow me into to the sea of light

Like blood in the body
Like wind in the water
Let it rain down let it descend
Sea of light
The sea of light

Description:

The band.  Siouxsie Sioux, Steven Severin, Budgie, Martin McCarrick, John Klein.  Shot late September, early October 1991.  The video has a 'Man From U.N.C.L.E', 'The Avengers', British Spy, 60's feel to it.  Siouxsie, doing her best Emma Peel impersonation hangs precariously from the rooftops. The band members perform flag signals in formation.  Cutaway shots show Siouxsie swirling and lurching in a feather headdress like a benevolent Disney Villianess.  Siouxsie is later seen embracing and kissing another woman (Severin's then girlfriend 'Cricket') in a tableau reminiscent of Man Ray's photograph 'Nusch Eluard Et Sonia Mosse'  Siouxsie high kicks, ala Emma Peel and is last seen spiralling into oblivion amidst some swirling animated graphics .  There are three versions of this video in existence.  The long form version appears on the 'Twice Upon A Time' video collection.  A shorter, single length version exists but has not received a domestic release.  Finally there is a censored version that edits out the lesbian kiss to make it suitable for the censors at MTV.  Last video directed by Peter Scammel.

I get the feeling, I'm not alone
I get the feeling, it's someone I don't know

Do you ever have the strange sensation
When you're standing mighty tall
To jump from 17 floors and crash into freefall
But then fear takes control
Fear of the unknown

Imagine two complete strangers
Who suspect they were meant to be
Both in need of love and affection
Yet their suspicions prevent something heavenly

Fear takes control
Fear of the unknown

Aware of what will hurt you
You're prepared to remain this way
So sad yet safe with your afflictions
Afraid to start a brand new day

We all get the strangest feeling
When we're standing mighty tall
To jump from 17 floors and crash into freefall

But then fear carries all
Fear of the unknown
Fear takes its toll
Fear of the unknown

Aware of what will hurt you
You're prepared to remain this way
So sad yet safe with your afflictions
Afraid to start a brand new day

Face To Face Advert - Click Here For Bigger ScanFace To Face Advert - Click Here For Bigger ScanThat realm between the beautiful daydream and the incoming darkness of nightmare has always been the Banshees' domain.  And Siouxsie herself makes the obvious choice for Catwoman: no one else has kept their beauty, mystery and power intact as enduringly as this slinky, sinister siren.  Therefore their contribution to "Batman II" is inspired, putting you firmly in Tim Burton's picture, but keeping an allure all of their own, while stalking Gotham City at twilight on padded feet.  Stealthily, eerie, and all those other things that come naturally to them.

  Description:
The band:  Siouxsie Sioux, Steven Severin, Budgie.  Although both Martin McCarrick and John Klein play on this track, they were not asked to appear in the video.  Tim Burton asked the Banshees to write/record the theme song for 'Batman Returns'.  The result of which was 'Face To Face'.  The understanding was that Tim Burton would also direct the video for the song.  So enthused was the film maker that he showed the band preliminary sketches of characters that he would include in the shoot, some of which would ultimately end up in his own film 'A Nightmare Before Christmas'.  However, preview audiences showed signs of not enjoying Burton's original ending for the film, in which Catwoman dies, and he was called back to re-edit/shoot a new ending.  Burton's renewed schedule meant that he was no longer available to shoot the video and he handed the reigns over to Neil Abramson.  The video itself, shot in Brick Lane, London,  is grandly Gothic, in the true sense of the word, with beautiful sets throughout.  Siouxsie looks stunning in her appropriation of the Catwoman look , tight, black, rubber/vinyl backless dress with the obligatory stiletto boots.  Severin and Budgie are relegated to Penquinesque grotesques, shuffling, bowing and at one point swinging from the rafters like sleeping Vampire bats.  The band footage is inter-cut with scenes from the film.  Classic moment; Siouxsie reclines on a Chaise Lounge, gazing into a mirror that is backed with a close-up of the face of the Mona Lisa.

Face to face
My lovely foe
Mouth to mouth
Raining heaven's blows
Hand on heart
Tic tac toe
Under the stars
Naked as we flow

Cheek to cheek
The bitter sweet
Commit your crime in your deadly time

It's too divine
I want to bend
I want this bliss but something says I must resist

Another life
Another time
We're Siamese twins writhing intertwined
Face to face
No telling lies
The masks they slide to reveal a new disguise

You never can win
It's the state I'm in
This danger thrills and my conflict kills
They say follow your heart
Follow it through
But how can you
When you're split in two?

And you'll never know
You'll never know

One more kiss
Before we die
Face to face
And dream of flying
Who are you?
Who am I?
Wind in wings
Two angels falling

To die like this
With a last kiss
It's falsehood's flame
It's a crying shame
Face to face
The passions breathe
I hate to stay but then I hate to leave

And you'll never know
You'll never know

  I Could Be Again Lyrics

Through growing gloom, I see the flicker of treason
Dancing on the picture of what might have been
This minute will last a day, these days will last for years
And those years that take ten lifetimes
Will pass without a reason

To be again, I could be again
To be again, I could be again
Rising up, the notion of rejuvenation
Oh yes, I could be again
I could be again
Rising up, I could be again

Taking form a complete transformation
Just us the cameras and those wonderful people out there in the dark
This minute will last a day these days will last for years
And those years that take ten lifetimes well I won't let disappear

To be again, I could be again
To be again, I could be again
Growing in the dark
From such a tiny spark
It's me again
I could be again
It's me again
I could be again

The lyric 'Just us, the cameras and those wonderful people out there in the dark' is a actually a line quoted by Gloria Swanson at the end of the film Sunset Boulevard.
