Ah, the nostalgia.  Before tonight, it had been years since I'd been asked for spare change towards the price of a ticket outside a venue.  Inside, there is the touching sight of senior goth citizens; receding hair dyed and lacquered into strangely shaped sculptures, monochrome make-up painted over lined faces.  Without a doubt, if the Banshees had strolled on stage and struck up with 'Hong Kong Garden' or 'Happy House', the place would have gone berserk.

But crass crowd-pleasing has never been the Banshees' way.  Five of the first six songs are taken from their admirable new album, 'The Rapture'.  By the end of the night they've played every song on the LP, along with only four of their Top 40 singles:  'Christine', 'Face To Face', 'O Baby' and 'Peek A Boo'.  It's all the more brave because 'The Rapture' features some of the most lush, ornate and melodic Banshees music ever, along with some shamelessly romantic sentiments.  It offers very few noisy, cheap thrills.

Remarkably, though, they keep the audience on their side.  The guitars weave delicate patterns sometimes oddly reminiscent of African music and Sioux's voice has never sounded so rich and warm.  'Forever' is a ravishingly pretty lost-love song; 'Falling Apart' a dramatic panic attack in song.  The only mildly irritating factor is their continuing tendency to pack their lyrics with ornate, impenetrable metaphors.  In 'Forever', for instance, Sioux somehow manages to sing:  "Senses dissolve into soliloquies/Flooding ascent in synchronicity".  I think she means that her ex was a good shag, but I can't pretend that I'm sure.

Whatever, the music is luxurious.  We're all getting happily hypnotised, when suddenly they snap us out of it with one of the most brutal songs they've ever written.  'Night Shift' (from the 1981 album 'Juju'), is a jagged, startling study of murder and misogyny in which the words are very clear:  "F*** the mothers/F*** the others, kill the mothers".

It's the start of a closing sequence in which the pace steadily increases, and we get some of that old-time Sioux jerky dancing to watch.  They reach maximum velocity on the untypically frantic new song, 'Love Out Me', before leaving the stage in triumph.

After all these years, they remain perverse, awkward, mischievous and unpredictable, making things difficult for themselves and still succeeding.  It seems The Banshees haven't really changed that much at all.
