  Shooting Sun Lyrics

We’ve been waiting inside our fears
Eyes that scorn you imprison you with tears
Now awoken rise up your new age schemes
Just like the shooting sun mirrors your golden dreams

And we’ll wait for you ‘til dawn – ring it in
To stare back at the eyes that scorn – ring it in

We’ve been sinking with every step they spurn
Now we’re thinking it’s time for them to burn
Crept up slowly with a pocket full of beams
Softly spoken ‘Take these eyes and see’

And we’ll curse the years of stone – it’s ringing in
We’ll laugh in the eyes that scorn

We’ll light them one by one touched by the shooting sun
Flames run in golden streams echoing golden dreams
We’ll kiss them one by one just like the shooting sun

We’ll burst the ears of stone
We’ll laugh in the eyes that scorn – ring it in

We’ll light them one by one touched by the shooting sun
We’ll kiss them one by one like my shooting sun
My shooting son

  Sleepwalking (On The Highwire) Lyrics

You can see her now
High as the Horizon
Born into quicksand
And raised on the mud

Balancing on tiptoe
Sharpened to the blow
In a tangle of thunder
Falling helplessly below

Sleepwalking
Sleepwalking on the high wire
Sleepwalking
Sleepwalking into the open palm of the empty sky

You can't hurt her now
You can't reach her at all
A spiral of persuasion
Twists until freefall

Balancing on tiptoe
Angles plush and slow
An accident of circus
Falling helplessly below

Sleepwalking
Sleepwalking on the high wire
Sleepwalking
Sleepwalking into the open palm of the empty sky

  She Cracked Lyrics

When she was sensitive she understood me
Well she understood you and me and things in 1943
She does all these things that I can't stand
I get jealous when she stays with another man

She cracked
I'm sad but I wont
She cracked
I'm hurt you're right
Well she cracked I wont

She did things that I don't
She self destruct necessary to self enjoy
I self developed necessary to self help and

She cracked
I'm sad but I wont
She cracked
I'm hurt you're right
Well she cracked I wont

She did things that I don't
She eat garbage eat shit and get stoned
I stay alone
Eating health food at home

She cracked
I'm sad but I wont
She cracked
I'm hurt you're right and

She cracked
I'm sad but I wont
She cracked
I'm hurt but alright
And she cracked
I'm sad but I wont
She cracked
I'm hurt but alright

  Love In A Void Lyrics

Too many fools blocking my motion
Clouding my eyes, must be the potion
Spots in my eyes, must be the lotion
Spots in my eyes, must be the lotion

Love in a void
It's so numb
Avoiding love
Its so dumb
Love in a void

Too many bigots for my liking
Too many critics, too few writing
Rabid dogs that aren't biting
Rabid dogs that aren't biting

Love in a void
It's so numb
Avoiding love
Its so dumb
Love in a void

Jaded reputation on which you're staking
Lots of money for the making
For all the stars they're just faking
For all the stars they're just faking

Love in a void
It's so numb
Avoiding love
Its so dumb
Love in a void

  Mirage Lyrics

I'm just a vision on your TV screen
Just something conjured from a dream
Seen thro' your x-ray eyes
A see thro'  scene
The image is no images
It's not what it seems

My limbs are like palm trees
Swaying in the breeze
My body's an oasis
To drink from as you please
I'm not seeing what I'm meant to believe in
Your non-excuse for human being

It's not plain to see
That I'm playing with me
A photo fit of loose ends framed in 3-D
Seen thro' your x-ray eyes
A see thro' scene
The images no image is
It's not what it seems

  Suburban Relapse Lyrics

I'm sorry that I hit you
But my spring snapped
I'm sorry I disturbed your cat nap
But whilst finishing a chore
I asked myself 'what for?'
Then something snapped.
I had a relapse
A suburban relapse

I was washing up the dishes
And minding my own business
When my string snapped
I had a relapse
A suburban relapse

Should I?
Throw things at the neighbours
Expose myself to strangers
Kill myself or you?
Now memory gets hazy
I think I must be crazy
but my string snapped
I had a relapse
A suburban relapse

  Metal Postcard Lyrics

Reunion begins with a glass of mercury
Whilst television flickers
With another News Bulletin
Flints light up the eyes
Of the seated family

Metal is tough, Metal will sheen
Metal won't rust when oiled and cleaned
Metal is tough, Metal will sheen
Metal will rule in my master scheme

With a clockwork jerk
Pluck cogs from fob watches
For dinner on Friday
Then recoiling say 'excuse me
Must go recycle
My precious machinery

Metal is tough, Metal will sheen
Metal won't rust when oiled and cleaned
Metal is tough, Metal will sheen
Metal will rule in my master scheme

It's ruling our lives
There is no hope
Thought I'd drop a line
The weather here is fine
But day and night
It blares
Commanding through loud speakers

Metal is tough, Metal will sheen
Metal won't rust when oiled and cleaned
Metal is tough, Metal will sheen
Metal will rule in my master scheme

Dedicated to the celebrated photomontage artist of the Twenties/Thirties, John Heartfield, the original title for this song was 'Letter To Heartfield'. The chorus is taken from one of Goerring's speeches during the Second World War.
SIOUXSIE: "It's a warning song. The whole propaganda of the Nazis at that time was very dangerous and it could easily creep its way in without there being all the hysteria of killing the Jews. Their whole propaganda could easily fit in today." How does she see this Metal Metropolis? "Not being able to get away from the commands of the day, not being able to escape, the idea of having cameras in your room and having people watching you..." Source:  Melody Maker 21/10/78.
SIOUXSIE: "What lies around the swastika I hate, but I also don't identify with blind patriotism either. I couldn't write a song based around Heartfield if I had that attitude." Source:  Melody Maker 17/02/79.

This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both Of Us Lyrics

Zoo time is she and you time
The mammals are your favourite type, and you want her tonight
Heartbeat, increasing heartbeat
You hear the thunder of stampeding rhinos, elephants and ten feet tigers
This town ain't big enough for both of us
And it ain't me that's gonna leave

Flying domestic flying
And when the stewardess is near you not show any fear
Heartbeat, increasing heartbeat
You are a khaki-coloured bombardier it's Hiroshima that you're nearing
This town ain't big enough for both of us
And it ain't me that's gonna leave

Daily, except for Sunday
You dawdle in to the cafe where you meet her each day
Heartbeat, increasing heartbeat
As twenty cannibals have hold of you, they need their protein just like you do
This town ain't big enough for both of us
And it ain't me that's gonna leave

Shower, another shower
You've got to look your best for her and be clean everywhere
Heartbeat, increasing heartbeat
The rain is pouring on the foreign town, the bullets cannot cut you down
This town ain't big enough for both of us
And it ain't me that's gonna leave

Census, the latest census
There'll be more girls who live in town though not enough to go 'round
Heartbeat, increasing heartbeat
You know that this town isn't big enough
Not big enough for both of us
This town isn't big enough
Not big enough for both of us
And I ain't gonna leave

  Hall Of Mirrors Lyrics

The young man stepped into the hall of mirrors
Where he discovered a reflection of himself
Even the greatest stars discover themselves in the looking glass
Even the greatest stars discover themselves in the looking glass

Sometimes he saw his real face
And sometimes a stranger at his place
Even the greatest stars find their face in the looking glass
Even the greatest stars find their face in the looking glass

He fell in love with the image of himself
And suddenly the picture was distorted
Even the greatest stars dislike themselves in the looking glass
Even the greatest stars dislike themselves in the looking glass

He made up the person he wanted to be
And changed into a new personality
Even the greatest stars change themselves in the looking glass
Even the greatest stars change themselves in the looking glass

The artist is living in the mirror
With the echoes of himself
Even the greatest stars live their lives in the looking glass
Even the greatest stars live their lives in the looking glass

Even the greatest stars fix their face in the looking glass
Even the greatest stars fix their face in the looking glass

Even the greatest stars live their lives in the looking glass
Even the greatest stars live their lives in the looking glass

  This Wheel's On Fire Lyrics

If your memory serves you well
We were going to meet again and wait
So I'm going to unpack all my things
And sit before it gets too late
No man alive will come to you
With another tale to tell
But you know that we shall meet again
If your memory serves you well
This wheel's on fire,
Rolling down the road,
Best notify my next of kin
This wheel shall explode

If your memory serves you well,
I was going' to confiscate your lace
And wrap it up in a sailor's knot
And hide it in your case
If I knew for sure that it was yours
But it was oh so hard to tell
But you knew that we would meet again
If your memory serves you well
This wheel's on fire
Rolling down the road
Best notify my next of kin
This wheel shall explode

If your memory serves you well
You'll remember you're the one
That called on me to call on them
To get you your favors done
And after every plan had failed
And there was nothing more to tell
You knew that we would meet again
If your memory served you well
This wheel's on fire
Rolling down the road
Best notify my next of kin
This wheel shall explode

SIOUXSIE: "I had the hots for Julie Driscoll!. I can’t remember when this originally came out, but I’d have been about 11, and I was besotted by her, by the way she looked, by her voice. It was very different to watching Lulu on ‘Top Of The Pops’, this woman with a shaven head and huge black eyes. I thought she was incredibly beautiful, very spiky and strong and tough - not at all cute and cuddle and feminine. And I loved the song. It conjured up all sorts of fantastic stories for me."   Strange Fruit Lyrics

Southern trees bear strange fruit
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees

Pastoral scene of the gallant south
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh

Here is fruit for the crows to pluck
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop
Here is a strange and bitter cry

SEVERIN: "I don't think Siouxsie had heard Billie Holiday before we listened to 'Strange Fruit'. And I think that anyone can sing a protest song. You're lost little girl
You're lost little girl
You're lost
Tell me who
Are you?

I think that you know what to do
Impossible? Yes, but it's true
I think that you know what to do, yeah
I'm sure that you know what to do

You're lost little girl
You're lost little girl
You're lost
Tell me who
Are you?

I think that you know what to do
Impossible? Yes, but it's true
I think that you know what to do, girl
I'm sure that you know what to do

You're lost little girl
You're lost little girl
You're lost

  The Passenger Lyrics

I am the passenger
And I ride and I ride
I ride through the city's backside
I see the stars come out of the sky
Yeah the bright and hollow sky
You know it looks so good tonight
I am the passenger
I stay under glass
I look through my window so bright
I see the stars come out tonight
I see the bright and hollow sky
Over the city's ripped backside
And everything looks good tonight
Singing la-la-la-la
la-la-la-la
la-la-la-la
la-la-la-la
la-la-la-la
la-la-la-la
la-la
Get into the car
We'll be the passenger
We'll ride through the city tonight
We'll see the city's ripped backsides
We'll see the bright and hollow sky
We'll see the stars that shine so bright
Stars made for us tonight
O the passenger
How he rides
O the passenger
He rides and he rides
He looks through his window
What does he see
He sees the sign and hollow sky
He sees the stars come out tonight
He sees the city's ripped backsides
He sees the winding ocean drive
And everything was made for you and me
All of it was made for you and me
Because it just belongs to you and me
So lets take a ride and see what's mine
Singing la-la-la-la
la-la-la-la
la-la-la-la
la-la-la-la
la-la-la-la
la-la-la-la
la-la
O the passenger
He rides and he rides
He sees things from under glass
He looks through his window side
He sees things he knows are his
He sees the bright and hollow sky
He sees the city sleep at night
He sees the stars are out tonight
And all of it is yours and mine
And all of it is yours and mine
So lets ride and ride and ride and ride
Singing la-la-la-la
la-la-la-la
la-la-la-la
la-la-la-la
la-la-la-la
la-la-la-la

  Gun Lyrics

Me and my partner we work on the run
The quick try to get quicker
And the creepers get hung
Now it's you that got wasted tonight on the job
One lost his liquor
And the other lost his hand

Ten sticky thumb prints on the door and the sink
But nothin' saw nothin' just smell the stink
Five hundred mug shots and a hundred to one
Four forgotten and the rest just won't come

When you've begun to think like a gun
The rest of the year has already gone
When you've begun to think like a gun
The days of the year have suddenly gone

Well blood on the windows and blood on the walls
Blood on the ceiling and down in the halls
And the papers keep pounding on everything I burned
And the people getting restless but they'll never learn

I picked up a doctor - he's good with a knife
Says anaesthetic's a waste of his time
Works in a hurry but always worthwhile
Knows they won't be back for a long long time

Top of the staircase was ready to fall
We were still waiting downstairs in the hall
Watch out for big mama, she'll set you on fire
Or go for your neck with the chicken wire

When you've begun to think like a gun
The days of the year have suddenly gone
Once you've begun to think like a gun
The days of the year have already gone

Mother of plenty, mother of none
You've got me cornered and still on the run
I don't care nothing about you anyway
Stuck in this hole I'm on my way

Yeah when you've begun to live like a gun
The days of the year have already gone
When you've begun to think like a gun
The days of the year have suddenly gone

SIOUXSIE: "On 'Gun', he (Carruthers) added a really straight acoustic guitar bit which sounded like the theme to Blue Peter or something, so I had this idea of twisting the knobs on the mixing desk and really fucking up the sound to make it more exciting. John was outraged and came storming in accusing me of wrecking some great artistic piece of work. He just wasn't responsive to any kind of invention or creativity."  Source: The Authorised Biography 2002.

  Sea Breezes Lyrics

I’ve been thinking now
For a long time
How to go my own separate way
It’s a shame to think
About yesterday
It’s a shame

We’ve been running round
In our present state
Hoping help will come from above
But even angels there
Made the same mistakes

In love
In love
In love

Now that we are lonely
Life seems to get hard
Alone
What a word lonely
Alone it makes me cry

Thought train set in motion
Wheels in and around
Express our emotions
Tracks up then it tracks down

We’ve been running round
In our present state
Hoping help will come from above
But even angels there
Made the same mistakes

In love
In love
In love

  Little Johnny Jewel Lyrics

Now Little Johnny Jewel,
Oh, he's so cool,
He has no decision,
He's just trying to tell a vision.
Some thought that this was sad,
And others thought it mad,
They just scratching the surface,
JJ can do the floor kiss.
Was he on display?
No, no, not today.
All that guy ever said,
He said, " I want my little wing-head".
He half-asleep at night
Over his head, sensation of flight.
And he wake up dreaming,
Dreaming...
And he run down to the airport,
The rush, the roar,
And he crouched down behind a fence,
With a chest full of lights,
Then,
He loses his senses...

Oh Little Johnny Jewel,
He's so cool,
But if you see him looking lost
You ain't gotta come on so boss!
And you know that he's paid,
You know that he's paid the price,
All you gotta do for that guy
Is wink your eye

  She's Cuckoo Lyrics

Wryneck laughter from gatherings of stony chit-chat
As the Sea Swallows a golden eye beneath this black hat
A Scarlet Stealer, oo it's a cardinal sin
Blue Jay taker grabs your heart from within
Dab chick dipper do a thick kneed turn
Rough legged Buzzard watch the Butcher bird burn

Cuckoo, she's cuckoo for you

Night Jar purring, like a sewing machine
Ah shear water keeps this Kingfisher clean
I'm a Black Throated Diver, a Cherry Tree Creeper
Wax your wings now I'm a Turnstone Leaper

Oh scratch your white throat with a razor bill
Red Back shrikes 'neath the Yellow Hammer drill

Cuckoo, she's cuckoo for you

Oyster Catcher in the still of the night
Hooded Crow spirals like a Merlin Kite
Chiff-chaff chokes silent as a low Pintail
Stormcock screams into the teeth of a gale

Tie bunting knots around a Goatsucker
hear a toy-to" oh hear it chucker-chucker

In midnight guise these cobalt eyes
Pierce the indigo skies
Filtering through a Prussian army
Paints a royal hue
Forget-me-nots and violet flames weave titanium chains
Of sapphire days and turquoise dreams
In floating ultra-marine

Something blue--something sparkling through
Out of the blue, I'm reminded of you

Forget-me-nots and violet flames weave titanium chains
Of sapphire days and turquoise dreams
In floating ultra-marine

Something blue--something sparkling through
Out of the blue, I'm reminded of you

Song From The Edge Of The World Lyrics

Let me take you down
To testify
Under the brow of a sparkling sky
We'll dance away
A distant day
And shout our sins
In a passion play

Over we go
Diving for pearls
Over we go
From the edge of the World

Let the fire fall in
The footsteps we leave
Painted on the ground
We'll watch the stars
Come crashing down
Upon our heads
Like a madding crown

Over we go
Diving for pearls
Over we go
From the edge of the World

Let me take you down
To testify
Under the brow of a sparkling sky
We'll dance away
'Til the day is done
Then rise again
To unwrap the Sun

Over we go
Diving for pearls
Over we go
From the edge of the World
This is the song from the edge of the World

The Whole Price Of Blood Lyrics

Oh how could do it?
A murderous crime
A murderous wounding
How could you allow it?
After time that's been passing
Time should be wisening

A law that was written
In the blood of your victims
Born out of pure resentment
And what of your baby daughters
And what of these shameless slaughters
Lying buried in the sand?

Oh how could you do it?
A murderous past
That preys on the helpless
How could you allow it?
Such cruel and vile blades
To tear at such tender flesh

And loose the knot
From your tongue
Where evil is the resting place
And so it shall only be the single cry
Five senses shall be
The whole price of blood

Foot by foot, wound by wound
The whole price of blood
Hand for hand, strike for strike
The whole price of blood

Oh how could you do it?
Oh how could you allow it?

Based on a episode from a series called 20/20 Vision Siouxsie saw about a female version of amnesty, called  'Les Sentinelle',  "They rescue women who are trapped in certain religious climates in the Middle East, religions that view any kind of pre-marital sexual aspersion as punishable by death - either by the hand of the eldest brother, or by public stoning". A sister piece to 'Swimming Horses'.  Source:  Downside Up liner notes.

  Mechanical Eyes Lyrics

Driverless and circling car
Runs over its owner
Five accidents
Man on fish diet grows scaly skin
Crippled dog helps boy to walk again
Five accidents

Mechanical eyes to the blind
Mechanical eyes to the blind
Ah milk without the cows, honey without the bees
Do you laugh your greatest powers away?

Ah blink, blink
Mechanical eyes
Mechanical eyes
Five accidents
Ah blink, blink
