Standing There Advert - Click Here For Bigger ScanYes, yes, yes, now the sodding punks have as well.  The face that launched a thousand bin liners, Siouxsie Sioux, returns in the guise of The Creatures and creates one of the finest singles of the year, in the process discovering Mutant House.

My founded has been well and truly dumbed by "Standing There" in it's Andalucian mix.  I have disliked the Banshees for a lot of this decade, so much so (and this is an old story) once walked out of a gig I was meant to be reviewing in order to see Sonic Youth across the road.  Five minutes later Siouxsie broke her leg onstage.  I assume it was the highlight of the evening since the music couldn't have been anymore dire.  But "Standing There" is a different fishnet tights full of kettles, however.  It's perhaps the most spiteful record I have heard for a long time.  I think that the object of Siouxsie's bile are the sort of greboes/men who infest the precincts of any urban shopping area you care to walk down like Big Mac litter.  Now you don't need a Magnum, just point this record between their eyes.

  Description:
The band:  Siouxsie Sioux, Budgie.  The video, like the song focuses on the empowerment of women and begins with a reversal of the Adam and Eve story, with Budgie offering Siouxsie the apple, who in turn bites into it and spits it back into his face.  The video has a flamenco feel to it and employs flamenco dancers to this end.  Also featured is Siouxsie's niece seen pulling the head off an Action Man figure and smearing lipstick across Budgie's face.  The female flamenco dancers are seen stamping their feet and having, what is best described, as a 'stand-off' with the male dancers.  The scene where Siouxsie's niece smears Budgie's face with lipstick was deemed inappropriate by TV stations and once again The Creatures fell foul of the censors.  A second edit was made to appease the programme makers.

  Description:
The Band:  Siouxsie Sioux, Budgie.  This is the second edit of the video.  The scene where Siouxsie's niece smears Budgie's face with make-up has been substituted with a scene of a golden apple falling to the floor and Siouxsie's niece holding a male and female doll.

Hey creepo's I'm talking to you
I've got a message to give it to you
You've got a problem we know
But there is something you ought to know

Standing there  across the thoroughfare
They stand and stare with that gormless air
So funny to see how dumb some grown men can be

An unwanted weed a dying reed
Left to consider life as it passes by
Ignoring your calling ignoring your taunting
Ignoring your feelings of self hate and loathing
How empty and pointless your life must seem

See them standing see them staring
See them wearing that same stupid face

Sticks and stones may break bones
But this taunting crones only cause inner groans
We ignore all your calling ignore all your taunting
Ignore all your problems of self hate and loathing
Somebody should show them where to go

See them standing see them staring
See them wearing that same creepy face

Standing there in the thoroughfare
They stand and stare with that gormless air
Does what you won't understand scare and make you mad?
Resentful and envious don't you disgust yourself?
So funny to see how pathetic some men can be

See them standing see them staring
See them wearing that same stupid face

Ignore all their calling ignore all their taunting
Ignore all their faking their self hate and loathing
somebody should show them where to go

The verbal abuse and misplaced bravado of & from men mainly towards women.  "It's about the direct contact you get on the street, it's not just verbal abuse anymore. You see them up ahead and wonder, 'Should I cross over the road or turn around and go back?'  (Budgie)  Source:  Record Mirror 11/11/89.

Fury Eyes Advert - Click Here For Bigger ScanOh sadness, oh sorrow, "Fury Eyes" is The Creatures at their least riveting.  It's been that sort of week, with heroes toppling off their pedestals all over the shop, with exactly zero regard for their audience.  Seeing "Plywood" Mike Tyson sucking on a towel and pleading for a chance to lose fairly was the final straw.  If we can't trust Tyson, whom can we trust?  And for us, it's merely the inconvenience of having our faith shattered.  For Neneh Cherry, it's going to be the complicated and costly process of renaming her daughter Buster.  This single is not, as far as I can tell, actually a song.  It seems to be more of a doodle, really.  A few xylophony noises that just remind you of "Hong Kong Garden", in vain of course, and Siouxsie singing rather like a crusty old maiden aunt.  Also there's something in the way she rests her head on Budgie's shoulder on the sleeve that suggests that is is looking for a safe harbour.  That's fine, but for goodness sakes, not on record!

  Description:
The band:  Siouxsie Sioux, Budgie.  The set is brightly coloured/lit and consists of an array of burning candles.  Wind chimes, mobiles and other paraphernalia hang from the rafters.  Siouxsie and Budgie are seen marking time within the confines of a giant treadmill as clever use of lighting shows them in flickering shadow.  The instrumental break entails a paper puppet show in silhouette and the video concludes with Siouxsie and Budgie in silhouette dancing against a background of multicoloured lighting.

Punch me Judy make me cry
You'll disappear and then I'll die
A love that's lost always returns
To feed the fire of a heart that burns
There's no sleep for fury eyes
So deep are the eyes of fury
Watching faces changing places
Running rings around the moon
Exchanging glances taking chances
Did we laugh and sing too soon
Our stomachs turns on a fever stream
But with no mosquito bite
Rabid kisses in a dream
Still we can't escape the sight
There's no sleep for fury eyes
So deep are the eyes of fury
Tonight they exorcise the ghost
Of love from its unyielding host
If that don't suit you scream and shout
If thine offend thee pluck it out
Alone in love with the other one
The one who doesn't know
And when we dance with the other one
The eyes of fury glow
Tonight they exorcise the ghost
Of love from its unyielding host
If that don't suit you scream and shout
If thine offend thee pluck it out
Who'll weep for the fury eyes
Beholding love a thing of beauty
There's no sleep for fury eyes
So deep are the eyes of fury
