Description: | ||
The band: Siouxsie Sioux, Steven Severin, Budgie, Robert Smith. Shot 04/09/83. The band are filmed along the streets and waterways of Venice. There is no storyline as such, just the camera following the band as they cavort around Venice as day turns into night. This is the first video appearance of Robert Smith and the first Banshee promo video to be directed by Tim Pope, who both bring a sense of fun to the proceedings. There are some clever camera effects including the superimposing of the waterways over parts of the footage, giving the video a colourful and overall psychedelic feel. A scene to look out for is when Severin is walking down some stone steps having been accosted by the local police.

Description: | ||
The band: Siouxsie Sioux, Steven Severin, Budgie, Robert Smith. The video has an overall 'underwater' quality. The whole band wear white, reeds hang down in clumps, bubbles rise to the surface and there are subtle changes of colour. Siouxsie is in the forefront while the rest of the band, wearing masks remain motionless in the background. Siouxsie was persuaded to use a make-up artist for the first time and looks strangely orange. The main feature of the video is undoubtedly the swimming horses superimposed over some of the footage of the band. However the band were not happy with the results. The understanding was that the horses would be filmed from above, not from under the water and they felt that the whole video looked stilted and lifeless. Hence the video is still to receive an official release. It was left off the 'Twice Upon A Time' video collection and resulted in a shift in the bands relationship with video director, Tim Pope. Last Banshees video that Robert Smith would appear in.

Like
most Banshees' records, this flatters only to deceive. An
absolutely titanic meeting of 'The Onedin Line' and the '60s Wall Of
Sound', it sweeps all before it - old ladies faint, children take cover,
grown men weep openly etc - on first hearing but fails to move
thereafter. Still their best for ages.

Description: | ||
The Band: Siouxsie Sioux, Steven Severin, Budgie. Although Robert Smith does play on this song his commitments with The Cure meant he did not appear in the video. The video, in keeping with the lyrics of the song has a very definite theme. A studio performance on a specially constructed set designed by Nigel Talamo & Caroline Greville-Morris that utlilises everything that sparkles, tin foil, metal, stars, etc.... The song starts with splashes of water hitting the ground and cascading back up. The main action is centred on Siouxsie, who with the aid of her ring festooned, glittering elbow length gloves, makes fast angular shapes. The resulting effect is a blurring trail of light. This is inter-cut with shots of Severin and Budgie playing their respective instruments, cutaway shots of tambourines and turning gun barrels and moving liquid mercury. The highlight is undoubtedly Siouxsie's jewel encrusted eyelids that when viewed briefly give the impression of her eyes being wide open.

Remixed
and remodelled with strings, choirs and all the production of a 'Hooked
On Classics' effort, 'Overground', 'Voices', 'Placebo Effect' and 'Red
Over White' do The Banshees credit - it doesn't sound in the least bit
silly, clichéd or pretentious, three traps which most previous
classical/rock experimenters have fallen into headfirst. In fact,
the power of a classical orchestra is the perfect foil for the band's
grindingly insistent sounds and there's something about Siouxsie's voice
which benefits from such a combination of chaos and formality.
'Overground' is the undoubted highlight, with the orchestra churning
away at a sort of spaghetti western backing full of castanets and snare
drums while the guitars snarl angrily between them. A little
reminiscent of Deep Purple's 'Concerto For Group And Orchestra'... but
let's not go into that.
